I am just back from having time in Edinburgh meeting people and inspecting accommodation for visitors.  We try always to get the right places to stay because having somewhere nice to lay your head at the end of the day, nice staff and comfortable surroundings can make all the difference to the way you meet the day!  No one wants to be woken in the night by noisy plumbing or spoil their morning with a poor breakfast – we try to minimise the chance of that ever happening for our guests by carefully selecting the places where they will stay.  Most overseas visitors fly into Edinburgh or Glasgow and so they tend to have a night or so in these places at the begining or end of their holidays.

In this case though I was looking for somewhere central close by the General Register Office of Scotland – now known as the Scotland’s People Centre – for visitors who want to take a short break in Edinburgh to learn how to research their family history and use the resources there.  I found a couple of hotels which are ideal so need look no further.

The Scotland’s People Centre is really a lovely building and now so easily navigated with good signings.  If you were in Edinburgh last year you would have been able to visit the Famous Scots exhibition.  This exhibition went on throughout the year and was  held in a room which has tiers of walkways and record shelving above it.  Very atmospheric and the room which I would dearly love to use for the introductory talks for our Genealogy Short Breaks.  I met with Ian Ferguson there the Centre Manager and we had a good talk about what we could offer to guests.  I’m really excited about what the programme will look like.

We really do try to see, or to get recommendations we trust, for all the accommodation we use for our guests.  I am off to Edinburgh tomorrow to pick some new places we have not used before.  I love it!  Then to the Kingdom of Fife to double check the routes, itineraries and transport we are using for several of our tours during the weeks before and after The Gathering.

New Lanark Mill

We went to visit this hotel for our Douglas Tour folk.  They will be staying here for one night, apparently when a party of MacDuffs are staying. We have visited the Hotel before but had a proper tour this time with the General manager. Absolutely ideal for our group and if they only had enough time they could have a lovely time exploring this heritage centre. Have a look at : www.newlanarkhotel.co.uk I haven’t found any photos that do it justice so you will have to go to the website.
