South African relations of Peter’s were staying with us last week which made a pleasurable holiday for us too!

Peter and Rosemary Banfield (nee Hunter) share a g-grandfather and when Rosemary’s grandfather emigrated to farm near to Johannesburg he used the local names of his Scottish homeland to name his new fields.  These include the towns and rivers of the Southern Borders: – Peebles, Tweed, Kelso, Hawick, Gala and the village where he was born, Lasswade.   He called his new farm ‘Standalane’ the name of the farm he left behind in Peebleshire.  –  All emigrants must take their memories of home with them to make the transition easier, it is just knowing where to look to find the clues to their beginnings.
